SENSE.nano SYMPOSIUM on October 25 & 26, 2021
The 2021 SENSE.nano symposium focused on human subjects research, exploring how sensors and sensing systems can enable current medical studies and future clinical practice. SENSE.nano 2021 also celebrated the re-opening of the expanded Clinical Research Center (CRC) at MIT, now known as MIT's Center for Clinical and Translational Research.
Broken into two half-day webinars, SENSE.nano 2021 investigated human health through various technologies including motion capture, physiological monitoring, and sensing tools for the study of bodily fluids. Over a series of invited technical talks, panel discussions, presentations by MIT-launched startups, and views into MIT research today with current graduate students, this event provided needs context and solution perspectives in the domains of sensing for medical engineering and science, and for the care of humans in their environment.

From the level of cells, organs, and body systems to individuals and populations, this symposium, broken into three half-day webinars, highlighted the needs for new sensing technologies, showcased research and innovations, and presented the impact of these technologies. Over a series of invited technical talks, panel discussions, presentations by MIT-launched startups, and a view into MIT research today with current graduate students, we provided needs context and solution perspectives in the domains of sensing for the study of biology and for the care of humans in their environment.

This full-day symposium highlighted the needs for new SENSE technologies, showcase research and innovations, and present the impact of these technologies. One symposium stream focused on sensing for AR / VR. The second symposium stream focused on sensing for advanced manufacturing. SENSE includes sensors, new instrumentation, remote sensing, and other measurements technologies. Technical, business, and visionary leaders from MIT, industry, and society shared their experiences and insight via a series of invited technical talks, presentations by MIT-launched startups, posters, and a panel discussion.

DRIVE
The impetus for the symposium is the recognition that novel sensors, sensing systems, and sensing solutions will provide insight into the condition of our most precious resources—water and the environment—at scales that were previously unimaginable.
May 25, 2017: the Launch of SENSE.nano
On May 25, 2017, MIT announced the launch of SENSE.nano—MIT.nano's first Center of Excellence. SENSE.nano convenes technical, business, and visionary leaders from MIT, industry, and society. A full-day symposium brought together the Ubiquitous Sensing experts and visionaries: those who are developing capabilities and solving technical challenges, who articulate commercial and humanitarian needs, and who envision the societal impact of ubiquitous sensing. From the opening keynote address, through sessions of invited technical talks, and to the closing panel discussion, we showcased current research and innovations enabling new generations of sensors while highlighting potential impacts of and needs for realizing ubiquitous sensing for man-and-machine and for the environment-and-ecosystem.
